Sectional and State Wrap-up; Team is 8th, Schaffer is First
Congratulations to the entire team on a fantastic season, which culminated in an eigth place finish at the state meet, our highest finish ever, and the first time the team has finished in the top ten. The team also finished 3rd at the IHSA Sectional Meet, and was given the honor of being voted Sectional Team of the Year by the other coaches. Overall the team established records in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 200 IM, 6-dives, 11-dives, and 400 free relay this year, and missed records in the 200 free relay by 0.01 and the 200 medley by 0.4. Can't ask for much more!
Individually, Will Schaffer (200 IM, 500 free) and Tristan Oleynik (diving), along with the 200 medley relay (Dan Doran, Keith Conrad, Schaffer, and Clayton Heinrich) were winners at the sectional meet, with Rob Donisch (200 IM, 100 fly), Clayton Heinrich (100 fly), Jason Stelzer (diving), and the 400 free relay also advancing to the State Championships.
At the State Meet, Wheaton had 100% lifetime bests, advancing to finals in both relays, plus Rob Donisch (100 fly) and Will Schaffer (200 IM, 500 free), moving on to consolations and finals, respectively.
In finals, the medley relay and the 400 free relay were both seeded 11th, and were outside smokes, moving up to 9th and 8th respectively, with each swimmer dropping time. Will Schaffer was victorious in the 500 free, winning by nearly 4 second in 4.33.7, and was second in the 200 IM by a mere 0.01, touched out by last years' champion Curtis Dauw. Will's time in prelims was the fastest time in the state this year, and is the 5th fastest performer in Illinois history. Rob Donisch also dropped time to 52.8 in the 100 fly finishing 11th.
Congratulations Gentlemen! The Team Stats and Meet Results pages have been updated to reflect this spectacular season!
